Wherehouse Entertainment, Inc. is a nationwide retailer of pre-recorded music, videocassettes, DVD's, video games and accessories through over 500 stores in 28 states.

CHALLENGE 

Wherehouse needed a new distribution facility to effectively accommodate continuing growth and increase throughput without increasing staff requirements.

SOLUTION

Mantissa designed a multifunctional tilt-tray sorter for Wherehouse Entertainment, which would fill orders for shipping and sort return merchandise for replacement in the Storage Rack Area.  Product is inducted both manually and by pneumatic dispensers onto the tilt-tray sorter at four induction areas.  Product is then scanned by a six-headed omni-directional scanner, which is able to read the UPC code through the packaging.  Items are sorted by destination, collected in packing boxes or totes, placed on conveyors and transported to the loading dock for distribution by truck to individual Wherehouse Entertainment stores.  

The tilt-tray sorter is 420’ long and operates at a speed of 300 feet per minute.  The system is comprised of 210 trays on 24” centers, which tip to 120 packing chutes.  The Mantissa SmartChute® 1 design was utilized featuring the swing arm divert, which effectively doubles the number of sort positions.  

The Wherehouse system is currently sorting 36,000 items per hour enabling them to meet the demands of their 282 stores.
