Weyco Group, Inc., is a leading manufacturer and marketer of men's dress and casual shoes. Weyco Group sells Nunn Bush, Stacy Adams, and Brass Boot brands in department, footwear, and specialty stores throughout the United States and Canada.

CHALLENGE

Weyco Group's existing dispersed facilities created significant logistical challenges and expansion concerns. Faced with these challenges, the Weyco Group decided to explore consolidation of their operations under one roof, while incorporating state-of-the-art distribution methods, which would not only handle their existing business volumes, but also allow significant expansion to their business growth in the future.

SOLUTION

After Weyco visited other shoe pair distribution facilities, a Mantissa Scorpion®, high-speed, tilt-tray sortation system was selected to be the cornerstone of the new Weyco Group Distribution Center. Mantissa installed a 490 foot sorter, designed to handle 150 trays per minute or 9,000 trays per hour, with two automatic inductors handling shoe pair boxes and 170 chute destinations.

The Mantissa solution demonstrated an existing interface with the selected warehouse management system provider and the existing application of shoe pair sortation. The sortation design incorporated a cross-sort configuration with a light-directed "case-complete" signal which indicates that an order is complete in the chute and that the case is ready to be packed, which kept the packers on the outside of the sorter.

The system layout provides for "one touch" picking all the way to packing. At the discharge of each chute, individual light/button and LED displays allow packing associates to manage multiple packing zones efficiently.

The overall Mantissa tilt-tray system proved to be an excellent fit for Weyco's business of distributing men's shoes.
