The Daly Division of Cardinal Health, Inc., is a national distributor of pharmaceuticals and health and beauty aids.

SITUATION

Cardinal Health needed to consolidate and automate distribution in the Daly Division. Goods to be handled represented a vast assortment of sizes, shapes, thicknesses and weights, from mouthwash and bandages, to vitamins and hearing aid batteries. Much of the product is fragile including glass items, which require gentle handling.

SOLUTION

Mantissa's approach was a tilt-tray sortation system, which includes a tilt-tray sorter operating at 330 feet per minute with a sort rate of approximately 21,600 sorts per hour.

In order to provide a viable solution ensuring gentle handling of product, Mantissa developed several unique elements for the design. Pneumatic side-load induction stations allow operators to scan and load up to thirty units per minute per station while protecting the integrity of the product. A "deep-dish" tray design eases product to the center of each tray regardless of the shape, size, weight or material make-up of the item. The Mantissa SmartChute™ 1 design with an automatic swing arm divides each chute longitudinally doubling the sort position capacity.

By custom designing equipment to successfully handle Cardinal's vast array of product, Mantissa was able to provide Cardinal Health with optimum product handling as well as significant cost savings due to increased throughput and productivity.
